Samuel Copley

Sam Copley was a student of Dr. Maurice Nicoll and took later part in the Gurdjieff Society in London as a group leader. Mr. Copley was known as a gentleman in the real meaning of the word.
He worked in the merchant banking and insurance company owned by his family in the City in London.
Modest as always, he says in his book that he can recall no noteworthy attainments unless it be now that, as a great grandfather at age 92 he has published this book.

Samuel Copley

Portrait of a Vertical Man: An appreciation of Doctor Maurice Nicoll and his work

Author/Artist: Samuel Copley
ISBN: 095144140X
Publisher: Swayne
First published: 1989

A biography is usually an account of the events of a life along the horizontal dimension of passing time. This book is different in that it attempts to illustrate the vertical component in the being of Dr Maurice Nicoll, a man who stood erect in the height and depth of his understanding. To this end the writer has chosen some of the main developments in his career and tried to show, whilst always acknowledging his gratitude to his teachers and other sources of inspiration, he found his feet and his own centre of gravity in each adventure and thenceforth spoke, wrote and taught with his own authority to the great advantage of many of his pupils.
